The Village of Hartland's 2024 Consumer Confidence Report puts it plainly: the water it supplies is very hard, approximately 23 grains per gallon. Many annual reports leave hardness as one row in a long table. Hartland's spells it out, which gives a Village home a clear place to start.
That frankness is useful. A Village home starts from a real number instead of a guess, and the install-day test only has to confirm it.
Five wells, every one of them shallow
All five of the Village's wells are drilled into the shallow sand-and-gravel aquifer, the deepest at 135 feet and the shallowest at 81. That is the shallow aquifer, not the deep sandstone.
Groundwater that close to the surface responds sooner to what goes on above it. A reading taken at your tap now is worth more than a figure someone wrote down years ago.
What the Village adds before the water reaches you
The same report says a phosphate solution goes in at every well station to coat the inside of the pipes, and chlorine goes in at four of the five wells. The 23 grains describes the water as the Village delivers it, after those additions.
What 23 grains looks like around the house
Hard water is what leaves spots on glasses, film on shower doors and fixtures, and scale inside a water heater. Those are the everyday signs of the hardness the Village reports.
A softener's job is narrower than people tend to think. It exchanges the hardness minerals for sodium (potassium, if the brine tank is loaded with potassium chloride), and the one result the visit is measured by is zero hardness at your tap.
